I agree with most IKEA is fab for budget but contempory homes. However if you shop in IKEA dont think you'll home will be unique because everyone will have the same cupboard, picture and lamp as you!
Getting a home that is modern but unique takes some research. I just finished my house and it looks fantastic and different because I looked round at places like IKEA got the ideas. I know it sounds weird but I found many of the items I wanted on EBAY. (New stuff) but you just have to know first what you are looking for. Companies on there sell unique and modern lights, rugs etc that look fantastic and are well priced.
The trick is first too design what you want by looking around then most of the things you can grab pretty easily in even places like Tesco!

Congratulations on your new home!! hope you enjoy it.
Firstly I would do a bit of research, get some home magazines - some of them can be expensive but well worth it as it avoids making ghastly mistakes which cost a lot more to rectify. Whatever you do, don't make hasty purchases and if you're not absolutely sure about something, don't buy it. I know from personal experience that when I've bought something in haste and thought 'that'll do' I've been really disappointed and ended up replacing whatever it was. Allow yourself time to get the RIGHT things - if you rush and impose time restraints upon yourself it can be disastrous.
Once you've got loads of inspiration from magazines I would take measurements - eg how big/small do you want your rug to be. Rugs can be a bit of a pain because they move, so, would you want your rug large enough so that it can be kept in place by the front feet of your chair or sofa?
When you are measuring for something like a table and chairs I would lay something on the floor eg towels or newspaper so that you can get a good idea of how much space a table will take up and how much space you will have left to walk round it. When buying a table remember that you need to allow for space to pull the chairs out when in use. Would you like a table that can be folded down when not in use or would you prefer something more formal that will take pride of place in a dining room with an interesting feature centre piece on it.
It is also essential to measure because things in shops look so much smaller than they actually are due to their spacious, huge surroundings.
With light fittings, you need to decide whether you want ambience lighting or task lighting and buy appropriately. Don't put all different kinds of lighting in one room or it ends up looking like a lighting shop. Consider the height of your ceilings, a huge chandelier type thing will look ridiculous on a low ceiling and a small, flush fitting will look lost on a high ceiling.
I wouldn't expect to be able to buy everything you need from one store and all in one visit. When you want to make a successful job of your home it takes time and patience. Numerous stores have already been mentioned by other members and I agree with all of them but really it has to be your choice and what type of home you are wanting to create. I know you say you want modern but modern can mean either cream and bland or colourful and brash dependant upon how daring you are and what your taste is.
I know we all want our homes to look perfect overnight but I always think that it is better to spend time getting it right first time and buy the best you can afford - it takes longer this way but it is definately worth it - you will come home from work every day and marvel at what you have achieved and it will last you for years and more importantly you'll enjoy it for years without having to change it.
Good luck
PS when you are taking measurements, write them down in a note book and put it in your car boot so when you see something unexpectedly you know exactly whether or not it will fit where you want it to go. I do this and I have had to get my note book out of my boot in the most unusual of places cos you never know when you will see that perfect piece of furniture.

Are you in the UK?
Dunelm are very good value for home and interiors, true they might not be the latest 'fashions' for home, but they are trendy and appealing.
Wilko's also do some nice bits and bobs for home, if you go to some of the larger stores you'll find tables, chairs, carpets, etc.
In Cardiff we have a fantastic store called 'What!' I'm not sure where other stores are located but they are a chain, and have really low prices on all sorts of furniture.
Argos catalogue are also a good bet, prices range from budget to more affluent and they have good choices.

West Elm or Crate and Barrel. Also, target and kmart have some nice stuff, if you want to go cheap. If you want to spend a little more, check out Ethan Allen contemporaries. I would check out a good interiors mag like Metropolitan Home. Just pick one up at the newsstand. Full of great ideas esp. colors and furniture arrangement.

BhS are good for light fittings and linens.
Marks & Spencer/ John Lewis for furniture
Don't kit the whole place out from the same store ; it'll look like their showroom.
