Since most 5 year olds are more interested in puds than other food have a backward party.

Send out thank yous for coming to party not forgetting to state party time and date then play games like take the tail off donkey (still blindfolded) and musical statues except they must stay still whilst music plays (much quieter) or chairs where chairs are added and all children are happy and get a mini prize at the end. Just start off with 2 or 3 on a chair until you have enough.

Give out party bags at the beginning but include a cup with their name on that way you can kep track of the drinks throughout. 'Party Pieces' do some great gift cups and bags. Just fill with a few small bits that they can use throughout the party.

At food time serve small cakes and treats but only a few. Then clear away and serve something like hot dogs or pizza. As most kids wont be stuffed from the treats and won't be saving themselves for afters either they will be happy to tuck into more healthy food.

Finish by saying hello to all and handing each child a small wrapped prezzie (like they would give on arrival). This can be the sort of things you would have put in the party bag.

Finger foods such as finger sandwiches, crackers and cheese, cut up veggies and fruit and dip, chips or pretzels and of course cake and ice cream. Try to serve foods that will not stain anything if spilled. The good old fashioned games such as pin the tail on the donkey, musical chairs, throwing beanbags thru various holes in a cardboard etc work well. Make sure that the party is short enough that you can play a game or two, eat cake and open presents but dont have to occupy a lot of time. Five year olds have a short attention span and can be a real handful.

I would provide a party tea of 2 different sorts of sandwiches, some crisps, carrot sticks, grapes, some kids biscuits, colourful iced cakes and some chocolate cakes. Maybe ask in advance if there are any vegetarians or anyone with nut allergy.

The games need to be quite short and simple so pass the parcel, would be good, musical statues, pin the tail on the donkey and best dancer competition.

Have fun!

Games : catch an apple in a big bowl of water (almost free), pin the tail on the dunkey,
write names of things/persons (why not children characters? like Dora, Winnie, Mickey) and everyone has to "stick" one on his forehead and guess who he "is"(completely free).
Write words, put it in a hat, and ask them to draw : play mime !!! (then again, free!!)
Play the telephone game. The first player choses and sentence and whispers it to the ear of the next one (only once, no repeating), and so on. See how the sentence has transformed. Funny, easy, free.
Play musical chair. Then again it's free.
Have a great party!!!:D

crisps, biscuits, cakes, the odd sausage roll or small sausage and some sarnies, only do a small amount of the sarnies etc, they like the sweet stuff. half of it ends on the floor or swimming on plates half eaten in juice that has been knocked over by an excited kid. good luck and have a nice party.
