Recent Gallup polls have said that only 46% of American's would vote for an atheist to be President regardless of how qualified he/she is or how little the opponent is qualified. Why does average American think an atheist shouldn't be President? Don't say that it is because that we are a christian nation because that just demonstrates your lack of knowledge concerning the founding fathers.

In concern to Janssen's post, I don't think that we should blot out "In god we trust" from the dollar or we should omit "one nation under god" from the pledge. To think that is to fall in to the widespread stereotype that people have formed of atheists. If there is one thing that an atheistic president would be more inclined to do is to put the acts of religious fundamentalists like Fred Phelps to justice. If you don't know, Fred Phelps stages protests at the funerals of American soldiers claiming that they died because god is punishing us for allowing gays to live in our country.

When the country was founded most people professed some king of religion. It's just the way people were at the time. Since most claimed christianity, people now say we are a christian nation.
I am surprised at the results of the gallup poll. I personally think an atheist would be best. No belief in an afterlife would make a person less warlike, and have more respect for life here and now.

ONLY 46%, and thats REGARDLESS of qualifications. thats almost half, with no other factors, like skill, and charisma in the equation

If you produced a Qualified atheist , the numbers would rise.

also keep in mind, what have Atheists made the most news about in recent memory, "The pledge of allegience", and even one about "In God We Trust" On money.

now if these are the two biggest issues you (I'm assuming by your outrage, you are atheist) and yours are getting riled up about, its not a stretch for the average person, who believes in A god, on some level, to assume they would be the top priorities, and people fear change, and having to cash in every Coin and Bill for 'god-less' currency isn't an easily organized task, and quite honestly is inviting problems(and possibly corruption for people trying to cash in.

I think you are interpreting the Data incorrectly, if you insert a faith, or non-protestant denomination of Christianity in the poll question, in place of "atheist", chances are the results would not fall far from the margin of error.

why? This may anger a few people, but it's just my humble opinion... I don't think that they have an accountability to a moral standard that is externally objective. Situational ethics that flow from what's popular, rather than what is principle centered and "right" regardless of the polls. Actions speak louder than words though, and there are many who publicly claim to be Christian, that I wouldn't let wash my car.

Though you may not like the answer, majority of Americans, saved, not saved or considering have some conviction about the reality of God and thus are looking for a leader that will help enlighten them about God,cuase even those that will fervently deny God with a straight face have some level of conviction in their heart about God being real.

A nation that is not 'backed by God' will certainly fall. I don't care what you say about the founding fathers, etc.; we are and always will be in Christians' eyes, "ONE NATION UNDER GOD"! Your question demonstrates your lack of knowledge in the Holy Word; please reconsider. Read Psalms 32:12.

many people would rather be told what they want to hear, rather than the truth. this applies to many aspects of life.

therefore, we get people who use Christian lingo to get elected, regardless of whose bidding they are actually doing.

Nothing-But America was founded on Christian principals. Therefore, as such we 'should" be a Christian nation. But these days such a comment is very politically incorrect.

Thanks for the thumbs down. The information comes from their own websites like it or not! Probably because they would take our right to freely express any religion in any form....people are kind of fond of the 1st Amendment and the FREEDOM to observe a religion or not to. It is our choice to vote the way we see fit and vote our own conscience.

After looking at the websites, please tell all of us if it is tolerant.

Source: Atheist Alliance and Amercan Atheist websites....we don't mind you right Not to believe, and it seems you have a lot of anger towards those who do regardless of their religion.

It's the average American's right to vote for whoever they want to. Don't blame me or any other American for not agreeing with the atheist's belief system. And that is what it is, a belief system.
