In the translation (by Eknath Easwaran) of The Dhammapada that I am reading, he distinguishes between "raw, unregulated, self-directed selfish" desires and "uplifting desire to dissolve one's egotism in selfless service to all." He goes on to say, "Far from denigrating desire, the Buddha knew it is the power of desire that fuels progress on the Noble Eightfold Path." He goes on to say that base cravings can be transformed into "intense desire directed toward spiritual growth." This is the sense in which I meant "desire."

From my perspective, only the mind can have desire. The heart does not think, but feels. My one wish would be to completely drop the self so as to be able to contribute something of value to humanity. Because desire is of the mind, and the cause of all suffering I doubt anything would come of any value to humanity. Paradoxically, when the attention is on the other the self is lost.

Since you stipulate this compass "(in this case 'Holy')," which is good you do cover it well by your keen clarification, the Desire is to ever teach the mind to be open to that most mighty of Censor, the Heart, and abide the Heart's circumspect entreats as sent and imported by its lordship, SOUL, for which Heart's just a one good purpose does translate life from up above and into terms below that the Mind can understand; this, regarding life's ever growing dynamic impulse.

For one's mind's desire today can be likened to churlish pride and thus evidence to be roadblocks tomorrow, which Stuff does weft and warp as does the environs in which that pride dwells, before which it had as mistakenly feign to be a princely boy who is as sure of a dinner and disdain as much a full lord to do or say aught to conciliate one.

Thus is the healthy desire to abide the Heart and thereby one's true and high self -- SOUL Itself -- the mightiest of all beings north of the Heart and that again, well north of the universes of the Mind power.

That we would all appreciate more deeply that what we do and the choices we make for ourselves impact others and that the things we do to others impact ourselves. Secondarily, that we could have the grace to realize humans have never been united in a single religion but are unique in their paths. To try to deny this or make it otherwise runs the terrible danger of infringement on the basic rights of human individuality and freedoms. Let each person come to their own spiritual choices and honor that right.

it is the aspects that ensure the total. it isn't the guy acquiescing to the total, yet really the total acquiescing to the guy. it is the sea that carves and shapes the coast of the earth, deluges it with floods and impacts it is climate. it is the universal of that one drop that determines the total. even if the drop is salty or clean, warmth or chilly, it is the needed nature of that drop of water that's person-pleasant in all those drops that altogether ensure the nature of that tidal wave. So, convinced the guy expertise of the drop does carry about the word of being the sea, in spite of the indisputable fact that it shouldn't supply away it is personal self-expertise to accomplish that. Peace

In my case it would be a magic wand, as I am a Pagan. My one wish would be for all of us to stop butting into each other's religions and respect individual rights to believe as we wish, free from proselytizing. I would also wish that everyone would be more compassionate to those in need, and that there would be less of an "us versus them" mentality when it comes to social classes.
