one way would be to go to start-run-msconfig-ok
find startup last tab and leave checked only what you want
or you can use software like winpatrol or ccleaner

Don't forget, wallpaper and screensavers run constantly in the background. They take time to load and use part of your memory while you are working. I have both set to blank and none.
