It depends. We go for a 30-45 minute to an hour fast paced walk a day, they get brushed every day (about 15 minutes each), and there are several treat times with basic commands a day.
My Maltese loves to play ball fetch, so it is not uncommon for me to toss a ball for an hour or more while I am watching TV at night. He brings it back and puts it in my hand, so I don't even have to get up.

I have a 7 month old, 41 pound pit bull and if you left it up to her she would play 24 hours a day. I swear she never sleeps. lol. We walk/jog about a 2 miles a day and then we play in the park for a about 45 minutes. Weather permitting. So all in all she's outdoors about two hours a day, roughly. She likes to play with her indoor toys too, she's very fond of her rope and her squeaky toys.

Well they are always with me, but actual playing an hour or 2 if added up through the day, unless we go out to the field then I play with them for a long time because I have a ball on a rope tied to a broom handle that they like, and a frisbee they like.

My canines is a SHE, and she or he wakes up early, desiring to bypass outdoors. She is on the market in, eats, and hovers around my ft if i'm cooking, hoping i'll drop a delectable morsel. I stay at homestead, so if I take a seat, she jumps in my lap desiring to be cuddled and petted. She 'prances' on the door whilst she needs to bypass out. She isn't involved in toys, inspite of the indisputable fact that she has some. She is familiar with whilst that's time for a stroll. I quite have her leash held on a hook by the backdoor, and whilst this is stroll time, she would manage to take a seat under the leash, thumping her tail. She owns me, lol. She does not do lots of something. Eats, is going potty, cuddles with me. She likes to take a seat down/lay at the back of the settee, looking out the window.

Most are short training/play sessions several times a day... unless getting ready for competiton... then a little more intense.
Dogs don't think in terms of time... so short and more is better for their state of minds... 3-5 times a day at 5-10 mins is better than one time at 60 mins... JMO
You can never spend "too much time" with your dog

I don't know how many hours or minutes on average, but it's a substantial amount. Especially when there's a little JRT that will chase her toys until your arm is about to fall off. Gotta keep them entertained and happy, or they don't sleep well at night. If we play with them and burn off that excess energy, they're much more willing to go to bed and actually sleep.... and since they sleep in bed with us....that's a good thing. :O)

With my 13 yr old Chihuahua/Beagle mix, I play with her whenever she brings me a toy. My 9 yr old Rottweiler, she doesn't really play but I walk her several times a day and she enjoys that just the same =)
