Usually right click the .doc file and choose open with, then pick writer from the dropdown list. If you don't get writer in the drop down list choose browse and go through the programme files for openoffice writer.
You have a choice of formats for saving the document you are working on in writer, go to file>save as then in the bottom of the window which opens click the down arrow in the box marked file type which will drop down the types of file you can save the doc as.
It's also easy to save a document as a pdf file, in the task bar is an red & white icon, click this to open the pdf export dialog box or go to file>export to pdf

Yes,
There are a few ways.
From Open Office, go to File> Open
Then, browse to the file.
Or from Windows Explorer, Browse to the file and Right Click on it.
Select "Open With" from the options menu.
Then select "Choose Program" from that options menu.
You can then select "Open Office Writer"
There is a checkbox on that menu that will allow you to always open .doc files using this program.

Open office can open doc. files. Just download open office and open the file as you would with microsoft word. When writing with open office, be sure to save it as a doc. file so it can also be opened with other programs, instead of the open office extension (usually exlclusive to only open office)
