Um, have you read it?
That's kinda like asking what's the significance of Cinderella or her fairy godmother in that story.

It's a story about fidelity, faith, dedication, and commitment. Ruth symbolizes youth and a sincere seeker of wisdom and truth. Naomi is mature, wise, and devoted follower of God. The fact that both primary characters are female underscores the ideal traditional values, behaviors and roles within the society that they lived. Yet, their beliefs and actions are timeless and teach eternal principles for all of us, regardless of gender.

That's the "whither thou goest" story, right? The basic idea is that a woman, even though widowed, felt more a part of her husband's family than the one she was born to, and lived with her mother-in-law after her husband died.
I don't think it means a great deal unless you know what her birth family was like. Perhaps it was just a reasonable choice. My in-laws (fourth husband's mother and sister) were nicer to me than anyone in my own family. But the second and third I hardly knew, and the first set of in-laws hated me because I was (a) too young, (b) a convert to Catholicism instead of one from birth, (c) not Italian-American.

Ruth and yet another lady, who're Moabites, marry 2 Jewish brothers. the two husbands die, leaving their widowed mom on my own. the different lady returns to her human beings. Ruth remains together with her mom in regulation, after making a touching assertion of loyalty. She returns with Naomi(her mom in regulation) to Naomi's human beings. There she gleans the fields for foodstuff for herself and Naomi.(meaning she picked over the fields after the harvest, to discover regardless of scraps of grain or foodstuff became left in the back of). She meets Boaz there, who's an extensive relative of her ineffective husband. She at last marries Boaz, and turns into between the ancestors of King David.
