If you totally can't afford anything but Greyhound look at the scheduals in Greyhound's website to pick the express busses. You may end up waiting in the major cities for a longer layover but the less time you have to be on the bus you'll appreciate. No time to ride Greyhound is good. Try going by train...

Make certain you check the air fares because they are often less expensive than Greyhound. Early November would be better because of the holiday crowds at airports and bus terminals.

My own preference would be to go in late April - the weather is nicer and the desert would be in bloom. The desert is magnificent when everything is in bloom.

Honestly, I would do anything else besides take a greyhound bus. Rent a car, drive your own, or fly. I have taken a bus before and tons of very weird people ride in greyhound buses. It takes forever, too, because they stop everywhere.

Southwest flys to AZ really cheap, esp on Tuesdays.

I would go November, the tempature is beautiful and the night skys spectacular. And you aren't traveling with a bunch of Christmas frantic holiday travelers.
