for awhile now my hands have been getting cold. They will suddenly get ice cold and then 10-15 minutes later they will warm up. most of the time for no apparent reason. Other times it is after I play the violin, after I type for a long time, or after I write for a while. Can someone explain to me what this is?

You're not getting adequate circulation to your hands because of the activities you are doing. I have the same problem when I type too long. The fingers are just not getting enough circulation and they get cold and numb. They work okay, though.

I'd just take a break now and then and swing my arms about, shake them up, make sure there's lots of blood getting there.

It usually has to do with poor circulation. If you are playing the violin your hands are in a position to force blood downward... thus cold hands because of decreased blood flow.
If you excercise and get your blood flowing you will notice they warm up
