no you dont.

you need to make sure you are using the red, green and blue component video cables (or your hdmi cable if you have an elite). then you also need to make sure you change the little switch on the base of the cables from "tv" to "hdtv". then you need to go to the xbox dashboard --> system blade --> console settings --> display --> hdtv settings --> and make sure it says 720p, if not, then change it.

I'm concurring with the guy above me. You need to use the component cables (green, blue, and red). Don't forget to plug in the audio cable for sound as well otherwise you'll be back here asking why you don't have sound.

The 360 elite is the only Xbox that utilizes the HDMI cable, although I heard they've made an adapter for us first generation xbox owners.
