The first few people that answered this question don't know what they're talking about, they obviously don't know anything about the PS3.
The 40GB PS3 isn't backward compatible with PS1 and PS2 games, the 40GB PS3 has only 2 USB ports, and it doesn't have the digital camera memory card slots.
The 60GB PS3 is backward compatible with nearly all PS1 and PS2 games, it has 4 USB ports, and the 60GB PS3 has the digital camera memory card slots.
As you can see, there really isn't a big difference between the 2 consoles, but the major big difference is that the 40GB PS3 has no backward compatibility.
Also, both the 40GB and 60GB PS3's come with other features like Bluetooh, a Web browser, Built in Wifi, and Blu-Ray.

THe difference is that in the U.S the 60 gig uses hardware for backward capability to play all 2400 ps2 and ps1 games. THe 60gig also has 4 usb, Mstick slot, Sd slot and compact flash media slot. THe 40 gig does not play ps2 games at all. and doesn't have the other media slots and only has 2 usb ports. Get the60gig if you can . In case you want to buy some ps2 games.

The price.
Only kidding, but not really...
I think they are exactly the same besides the price and memory mate.
I have the 60gb and am pleased with it, esp when you'll be able to use it as a Freeview box & record flms onto te hard-drive !

i work in the electronics department of a toy store and in all honestly besides memory size there is NO difference. until they take the blue ray out of the PS3 it will be one of the more expensive systems out there. memory is the only difference anyone who tells you otherwise doesn't know what they are talking about....trust me sony reps can't keep their mouth shut and they tell me alot.
