I want to follow up on the comment about burning pine. It can cause two problems.
First because of the pitch, it burns much hotter than most woods and can actually cause the bricks in the fireplace and chimney to expand too much and crack. I have seen that happen.
The second problem is also due to the pitch, any that is not burned can accumulate in the chimney and catch fire at a later date and cause a problem
Stick with hard woods and you'll be okay.

Burn seasoned hardwoods. No treated wood or plywood. Unseasoned and pine cause cresote to build up faster in the chimney and cause chimney fires. Make sure the chimney is checked first if you have not used the fireplace.

Wood you burn in your fireplace should be
** dry at least 6 months
** split logs if over 3" or 4" in diameter
** free of chemical contaminants
** soft or hardwood
** natural logs or composites
Don't forget your firescreen !!

You can't burn treated woods. So if you had scraps left over from a deck job, you wouldn't be able to burn them.
