I have been enlisted for 8 years, and I am currently an E-5, hopefully to be an E-6 soon. I am 28 years old, and I wish to to an officer. I am close to an associates degree, and I was wondering what program I should pursue to gain commision. I am concerned about age, because I still most likely need to gain my ba unless sta-21 is a possibility. I do not know about sta-21 because of age limits. Please advise, and don't tell me to ask my career counseler because she is an idiot.

You DO need to talk to an NC. STA-21 has tons of programs in it now. It is no longer just one program it is ALL the commissioning programs in the STA-21 program. You don't have to have any degree, but being close to done with your AA helps you also. IF your NC at your command sucks, which is likely in a lot of cases, go find a Chief or an officer that did go enlisted to officer to talk to and guide through the process. They both will understand your NC is an idiot, been there done that. Use your computer search engine and research on your own as well. Type in tons of stuff like "Navy enlisted to Commissioning programs." Or just go read the instruction and info on the STA-21. If you have been in 8 years you should know your way around pretty well when it comes to stuff like this, but if not if you have a cool PS onboard that works ESO they can help you also with helping you with the instructions and where to look and research online. But STA-21 does have age limits on many programs, but you are still ok for most programs. Don't just sit back and let things pass you by because you have a bad NC you CAN do the research yourself and in fact 99% of the people that do go enlisted to officer had to do ALL the work themselves because the enlisted community is not really supportive of helping you to the other side. YOU go become an expert on STA-21 on your own and nobody will be able to keep you from your dreams. Everything you need to apply is online. Go do your research and good luck.

It would appear to me that you lack the skill, knowledge and ability to be an officer. If you are an E-5 and co not have the ability to find the answer in your own chain-of-command are not ready for a commission. I support the LDO suggestion; I have known and worked with a lot of LDOs. Because of their enlisted time they have a better perspective of grass roots needs and concerns and do a better job than officers commissioned in other programs. I did however, have an LDO working for me that was probably one of the worst officers I ever met. He lied, cheated, and screwed over the enlisted people working under him. He finally got caught in a sexual harassment issue and the Navy dumped him. You need to talk to your career counselors and if you disagree or do not thoroughly understand what you are told challenge them to show you in writing what they are advising. Short of that see you Command Master Chief!

you are rapidly becoming too old to seek any commission unless you want to stick it out and go LDO or Warrant. STA-21 is your only option, as by the time you get out to attend college on your own/get the 4 year degree you will be past the age cut off for RL( you are already too old for URL)

since Warrants and LDOs currently do NOT need a 4 year degree (although that may change) that may be your quickest path, assuming you can smoke the Chief's exam

If you have 8 years in and can make E-6 you can also go apply for the LDO program where age isn't going to be an issue.
