I recently asked if scoping my Ruger 10/22 would be practical and several users all gave me a thumbs up to do it but they all seemed to add one detail: the rifle has to be new. My grandpa gave me my 10/22 after only about a half year's worth of use spread over the past twenty years. Other than the obvious signs of use (rim marks on the receiver, dirt in the bolt mechanism that can easily be cleaned, ect.) the rifle is in great condition. Would it effect a scope if it isn't new?

Nope, the age and condition of the rifle wont have any effect on using a scope on the weapon..... just put a scope of your choice on the weapon, dial it in and have fun hunting!!

NO...Not at all.Sorry if our answers led you to believe the Ruger had to be new. They work incredibly well no matter how old your 10-22 is. Just to claify. The Ruger 10-22's when they were new, actually came with a scope base in the box. You can buy a new one that uses the factory drilled holes on top of your rifles receiver for about $5.Then all you need is a set of inexpensive 1" Weaver Style Scope rings and a Scope, than you are set. If you would like a few places you can order the base and rings online I can give you the websites. Most any local Gun Shop Or Sporting Goods store stocks these rings and the base as regular inventory due to their popularity. Feel free to write should you need any additional information.....

No. But I would get a scope that is affordable for such a gun. Match the scope to the gun. A Simmons would be just fine for a 10/22. They are a steel at big box sporting goods stores and do not cost much at all. If you had a new Ruger 10/22 competition model with free floated bull barrel and no open sights then I would get a more expensive scope-but this is not the case. Get the Simmons and shoot away and gave fun.

I wouldn't fret about the used condition. Just clean the rifle well, including running a brush through the bore several times, and be a happy (scoped) camper.

You can install a scope on any Rifle no matter how old or new.* This will increase your longer range capability and make it easier for you to place your shot more accurately when sighting or aiming at game you want to harvest.*

Nopers. A scope helps you see and seeing helps you aim. All there is to it. A scope will work just as good on a hundred year old surplus Mauser as it will on a new Winchester.

The ONLY way it would affect your rifle is if, it is not drilled and tapped for scope mounts or does not already have a dovetailed scope rail on it, and you took it to an incompetant gunsmith to drill and tap it for mounts. Enjoy your new optics
