Are statins a good thing?

Or might people abuse them? What are your opinions and why?

When I say abuse them, I mean would people go and buy them to keep their blood cholesterol down and eat really unhealthily as well!

I don't know why anyone would abuse them, they don't get you high. Overall I'd say they are good, they lower cholesterol and have very few side effects.

Statins only work on the body's synthesis of cholesterol, not on dietary cholesterol, so eating poorly would onlly be overcome so much my taking a statin. A better example would be bile salt resins that bind cholesterol in the gut or ezetimibe which blocks its absorption, those work on dietary cholesterol.
Fact is, if you don't take the necessary lifestyle modifications the meds won't do you much good. lack of exercise is just as big of a factor as high cholesterol, and if you eat a ton of cholesterol, you'll just overwhelm the meds.
