Any advice on how to lessen the metal taste in food? Or which foods you or your loved one though tasted okay while getting therapy?

It's my mom...... my heart brakes for her. I'm trying all sorts of foods for her...not forcing her to eat, just making it available. .

I love her so much. I just just hope all this suffering she is going isn't in vain.

I so know that nasty taste! I am so sorry for anyone who has to go thru either/or both. Been there, done that, 5 years ago next month I was in your shoes.

I never found anything that lessoned that metallic, tin like flavor, but know it will fade once you finish treatments. I think about 6 months for me if I recall.
I chose to limit my diet to what I could keep down the longest or what did not make me want to poo every half hour...for myself that was rice or noodles with a mostly cream based sauce, using lots of garlic or black pepper to mask the tin taste. I also ate a LOT of saltine crackers...I rubbed the salt off though..didn't like it either during my rads. If you like garlic & don't get too close to loved ones it is a great cancer fighter...use mints, peppermint is lovely to settle the tummy as well)

I also sipped a coke or 7 Up, something to settle the tummy..don't know why that worked, since I was never a soda fan before or even now.

Also my oncologist MADE me eat at least 1 banana a day as potassium is SO important during this time. I loved them all my life, until forced to endure them for a year. Now I can't stand the smell of them.

You may have to experiment to find what works for you. I wish you all the best & may you be healed & healthy soon dear one.

I'm sorry to hear about your Mom. I know that must be very hard on you. She is lucky to have such a caring daughter that you would try to find a way to help ease her suffering. You are so sweet to do that hon!

Tasting metallic in the food is a type of nausea. The Chemo and Radiation therapy create many types of uneasiness and it can not be avoided. It will go in due course and time will tell you the results. Nausea and vomiting are common, side effect of Chemotherapy and Radiation therapy, but can usually be controlled by taking antinausea drugs, drinking enough fluids, fruit juices, preferably apple, orange juices and tender coconut water and avoiding spicy foods. Loss of appetite (anorexia) may be due to nausea or the stress of under-going cancer treatment.

The patient had to put up this uneasiness and there is not other way to eliminate this. After these therapies great care should be taken for not getting an ysort of infection. -

The blander the food, the less it tasted metallic to me. I ate a lot of cottage cheese, potatoes, milkshakes, applesauce, soup and soft bread. I was also dealing with a sore mouth as well and these foods were easier to eat as well. Any spice seemed to be intensified by chemo and also did the same to the metallic taste. Most drugstore/grocery store chains have a generic brand of nutrition drink that is less expensive than Ensure but tastes the same. I mixed chocolate with vanilla for a very light choc. flavor since I did not like either flavor by itself.
As others have suggested be sure some antinausea medicine is prescribed and taken accordingly to prevent the nausea. The meds kept me from ever feeling nauseated.

when you eat use a plastic spoon or fork. It seem to helps some. But I don't think anything can completely remove the metal taste. Especially if you have any type of metal in your teeth such as crowns or fillings in your teeth. Hope it works for you.
