Of course, this is subjective and dependent upon what each individual has heard.

I have heard that they are 'boneheads' and are not very bright. I have no idea where this stereotype came from.

I also heard that they think they are 'all that' and pick fights.

Marines are stereotyped by society as being ignorant. They are also believed to love killing and they hate on anyone that is not in the Marines.

So the last part might be true. My brother is a Marine.

Marines stick together better than blood families stick together. They watch each others backs and will do anything to keep each other safe. What they do is not murder, it is self defense.

Marines may not be "book" smart, but they have some of the best instincts and common sense in the world.

Marines have a bond that never ends, dead or alive.

I am not being biased just because my brother is a Marine, I am wanting to go into the Navy so this is not coming from my love for the Marines.

Here's some quotes about Marines from people. This might help you stereotype them.

Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering if they made a difference in the world. But, the Marines don't have that problem.
Ronald Reagan, President of the United States; 1985

The Marines I have seen around the world have the cleanest bodies, the filthiest minds, the highest morale, and the lowest morals of any group of animals I have ever seen. Thank God for the United States Marine Corps!
Eleanor Roosevelt, First Lady of the United States, 1945

I have just returned from visiting the Marines at the front, and there is not a finer fighting organization in the world!
General of the Armies Douglas MacArthur; Korea, 21 September 1950

The safest place in Korea was right behind a platoon of Marines. Lord, how they could fight!
MGen. Frank E. Lowe, USA; Korea, 26 January 1952

Marines I see as two breeds, Rottweilers or Dobermans, because Marines come in two varieties, big and mean, or skinny and mean. They're aggressive on the attack and tenacious on defense. They've got really short hair and they always go for the throat.
RAdm. "Jay" R. Stark, USN; 10 November 1995

My only answer as to why the Marines get the toughest jobs is because the average Leatherneck is a much better fighter. He has far more guts, courage, and better officers... These boys out here have a pride in the Marine Corps and will fight to the end no matter what the cost.
2nd Lt. Richard C. Kennard, Peleliu, World War II

The deadliest weapon in the world is a Marine and his rifle.
Gen. John "Black Jack" Pershing, U.S. Army
Commander of American Forces in World War I

The American Marines have it [pride], and benefit from it. They are tough, cocky, sure of themselves and their buddies. They can fight and they know it.
General Mark Clark, U.S. Army

The Marines have landed and the situation is well in hand.
Attributed to Richard Harding Davis (1864-1916)

If I had one more division like this First Marine Division I could win this war.
General of the Armies Douglas McArthur in Korea,
overheard and reported by Marine Staff Sergeant Bill Houghton, Weapons/2/5

They are not considered very bright, they are called Jar Heads and Gomer Pyles. Like they are a bunch of hillbillies. Also. once a marine always a marine. They are a marine for life. I've worked with many people that were in the various services in the past. Most really don't talk about their service, but you will know the guys that were in the marines, they are still proud and loyal.

Marines are typically stereotyped as bloodthirsty, aggressive, and not very bright. Always disciplined as a group, with colorful individuals that stick out from the ranks once in a while. They are trained to be tenacious and never accept failure. The Corps motto is "Semper Fidelis" which is Latin for "Always Faithful".

I've heard that other branches of the military consider the Marines very loyal , hard fighting and hard working.... but not too bright. Kind of like a dog.

1. Marines aren't the brightest folks out there.

2. Some people call us "Soldiers" instead of Marines.
