There is Network (usually in the same building) and Internet (access by everyone from worldwide).
Intranet usually refers to have a network accessible from outside, but not by everyone in the world. Basically as a mix of the two it gains benefits and drawbacks of both.

You can save money in shipping and mailing by being able to print directly to printers across the world. Cheaper than fax also.

People working on the same data can draw it up on their machines from across the world.

unfortunately it is abit harder to maintain than just a network

it does have more security problems than a network, altho less than an internet site

Thats all that I can think of at the moment altho Im sure there must be many more
