Children of all ages need their parents involved. If you child has trouble at school talk to the teachers and see how to help. Just being there for them is often the best thing. Be as involved as you can.

Your children need your time and interest more than anything else.
Spend time with them every day. Dinner is a good time to chat, ask about their day and let them talk to you. Every now and then, turn off your mobile and let them know this is your special time with them. Do fun things together like walks in the park, games of football, gardening, board games - whatever you can do together.
If they like to read, you can read to them, or get them to read to you, or share books and talk about them. Respect their opinions even if you disagree, so they can learn from you how to respect the opinions of others and make a proper argument, instead of just using abusive or dismissive language.
Get involved in something together - maybe volunteer at a young people's or children's project - so that they can work alongside you as equals and see how to earn your respect and that of others.
Never let the day end on an argument. However angry you are with them about something, make sure you tell them you love them before you go to bed and before they leave the house.

That's a biggie. I see a lot of kids, as my husband is a teacher and I, a volunteer.
The greatest thing you can do is keep talking with your kids. Mine is 22 and we still talk on all levels. Not always agreeing, but respecting each other's opinion. My husband does the same with his students. Keep the dialog open and be there. Let them know you love them, but when barriers are crossed, consequences will be brought. They will learn to make mistakes without severe repercussions and think the next time. Be aware of their friends, their schoolwork and their demeanor.
Parenting is not a one-time thing... it's a life-long project. Sometimes we have success, and sometimes we don't. But we always must try our best and let our kids see that we do try our hardest.
