Since you're not sure, call him "Sir" or "boss" or Mr. ___, until he says it is OK to call him by his first name. That avoids any awkward moments and still maintains respect.

It is not polite to call him by his first name although you have the same age or he is younger than you. You must always show respect to him and let him know that you see very well which is your place. In case he asks you to call him by his first name tell him that you feel honnoured nut in the same time embarrassed he will understand you
but do not forget your education

Personally I feel if someone feels free enough to call me by my first name then its' okay for me to call them by their first name, but if your not comfortable with that just ask what they prefer.

Call him Mr.______. If he wants you to call him by his first name, he'll tell you to do so. That way you find out what he wants to be called while still looking respectful and professional.

Every job I have worked in from my very first I have always addressed my manager by first name.
At the end of the day they are human, just like you and they are your colleagues, not somebody you should bow down to etc

You could try; "I just wanted to be clear if calling you [first name] is good for you."

I've generally used a very simple approach like "How do you like to be refered to? Mr. so-and-so or Bob". Give him the option. Tihs will also indicate to him that you are empathic and care about other's feelings.

ask him what he prefers. just be straight up and blunt but don't do it around any coworkers. showing respect is a good thing but more and more companies today have a lot more relaxed atmosphere.
