You were driving 20 over the limit, and didn't have insurance. On the insurance alone, the fine could be up to $500-$1000. If the car isn't insured, the owner of the vehicle will be forced to obtain SR 22 insurance. You said you haven't told your parents yet about the citations. I'm just wondering how you're going to tell them the car was towed. It was towed, wasn't it?. That's normal procedure.

There are some things you left out of this question that I wasn't sure about but don't panic. You will be fine! Did you get cited for the insurance or just the speeding ticket? If so you may only have to answer for the speeding ticket. Also, who is the car registered to? If you were not cited for insurance and the car is in your mothers name than most states will hold her responsible. If you were cited than tell your mom to get insurance placed on the car immediately and show the Judge on your court date that you complied and got insurance. Explain that you did not know the car was not insured. As your 17 the Judge should let you slide and if anything the parent should be responsible for the insurance issue.
Remember slow down and anytime you use a car it is your responsibility to make sure it is insured, registered and safe. Good luck!

Don't know where you are when you got caught so answers may vary but ( English answer ).
First Q .. who'se car was it ? Some answers are suggesting you can shift the blame for non insurance on your folks - no way, the only time that could ever even start to run was if they gave you permission to drive their vehicle and led you to believe you were covered. It still wouldn't stop it being an offence of driving without insurnace - you either have cover or you dont but it might reduce your penalty.
2nd Q .. If this was your folks car seems to me you didn't have their permission to be driving it because if you'd asked they would have said no because you are not insured. If they said yes knowing you were not covered they also commit an offence of allowing, or technically even using via your driving, the vehicle without insurance.
3rd Q If this was your own car it's totally down to you anyway.
4th Q If it was one of your friends car same situation as if it was your folks car they couldn't let you drive it.
5th Q and point to consider; It's time to tell your folks a bit quickly .. since the owner of the car can not give you permission to drive w/out insurance if you took it without asking that is 'taking without consent' a form of theft, and you will face additional charges. Your parents will find it very difficult not easily be able to avoid 'pressing charges' or 'filing a complaint' because if they try to protect you the instant they say they let you drive or would have done so they get done themselves for permiting/ using without insurance.
Edit: ref those who suggest you get insurance now before your conviction as it will be better and less expensive than once you are actually convicted .. be very careful of this, insurance policies depend upon absolute honesty and usually ask if you have any
( actual ) convictions or offences pending. Also even if you avoid that small print there is usually a condition in the policy that you have to tell them of your conviction once you actually get it and they often have the right to terminate the cover. If you tell lies to get insurance cover as they say, 'it just gets worser and worser' - you could then face charges of attempting to obtain property by deception, falsehood or similar wording depending upon your countries law and the insurance cover would be void or voidable. When you're in a hole stop using the shovel and look for a ladder.

usually the state sets the standard for what it wants as far as insurance.(uninsured motorist at a min /to full coverage and amounts set by your states laws.)

1) the insurance policy that is issued, is issued to a car not a driver. (the vehicle is insured. when driven the driver of that vehicle is insured. many companies have a rider clause for use of vehicle with permission of the owner / immediate family members listed.)

2) December court date state to the judge that you were driving your moms car. (registered to her , and presumed she had insurance?)

3) for your violation of speeding just a fine.

4) get insurance on the vehicle for both you and mom it is mandatory in all 50 states.

5) if your mom has insurance then get a rider policy to her policy to use the vehicle. most insurance companies will post a driver(s) of said vehicles. this covers anyone with a drivers license to drive the said vehicle and it is covered.(again depending on coverage, state laws / local insurance company will know how to handle this.) *oh get it before court date and rates will not be affected by ticket.*

settle down and relax. you have a speeding ticket. if you get insurance or show proof of insurance by you then the court will be satisfied.

where i live, the fine for getting caught driving without insurance is mandatory 1 year loss of license, up to $5,000 fine and up to 60 days in jail. That's where I live though.

Apparently in other states the punishment is ALOT less severe. What state are you in?

You are screwed. But as a responsible driver, one of those requirements is to have a current registration, license, and proof of insurance on hand every time you get behind the wheel. You can't push this off on mom, its your job to make sure you have it.

At the very least, you will be fined, and may have your license suspended.
