buy a japanese or european car the engines will be more fuel efficient and the interiors don't look like theve been finished in the cheapest plastic.Honda,Mazda ,B.M.W,,Mercedes all produce fuel efficient comfortable 4 seater saloons. Suggest you read the road tests available on u.k. site of "What Car".

The Chrysler PT Cruiser would be a good choice. It meets all of your criteria, plus you still get some of the utility that you would miss by moving from an SUV to a car. You can haul quite a bit with the seats removed, and the 2.4 litre engine is a proven design.

I would also suggest the Dodge Caliber. Great fuel efficiency, plenty of room to haul stuff, and really nice styling, but it may be difficult to find one used since 2007 was the first model year.

Indica Vista - If you want most bang for your buck. Great VFM, lots of space and built like a tank. Refinement is still not great though. Santro Xing - Great car but aged. On the verge of going off the market. Good VFM. Wagon R - New Wagon R looks good, peppy driving. My suggestion: Wagon R is the safest bet in terms of after sales service, running cost and resale etc but Indica Vista is the best product out of the three. I wouldn't touch the Santro Xing at this stage. Rather increase my budget and go for i10!

Consumer reports has a list of recommended used cars in their April edition every year. They base it on reliability statistics. I would suggest you start with that list and pick one that appeals to you and meets the rest of your criteria.
