A few weeks ago I started running in the morning, which I've never actually done before, in order to lose a bit of weight. The only time I an really get myself to do the straight workout if in the early morning before school, but around my period I always get REALLY awful period-like cramps that basically immobilize me for a few minutes after I'm done.

I've read some people saying you should eat a few hours before you exercise in order to keep this from happening, but is there an alternative, since I don't have time in the afternoon t exercise (and now that I've got a routine I'm really paranoid I'll let myself slip if I change anything...)

First of all you have changed your routine and it will take awhile for your body to adjust. Be patient.

Second if you read through the answers you got there are multiple answers. I am a nurse as well as a DIV I distance runner and a coach. The truth is the answer is training. There is some research that indicates possible links to sodium and potassium deficits but the overwhelming research indicates that it is purely fatigue. The more you train the less you will get them. Everyone is different as to when they start and how they manifest as well as how long until they take to stop.

Eating really has nothing to do with it. The idea of eating 2 hours before has to do with getting nutrition in your body for energy. The body shuts down the digestive system when you exercise so anything sitting in there when you start will just sit there. Personally, that is annoying to me and makes me want to throw up if I run hard. I eat at least 3 hours before if at all.

Mild exercise is recommended to ease period-cramping so don't stop. But you may need to ease the pace around that time. Again, everyone is different. Trial and error; finding what works for you and sticking to the routine really is the solution. Good luck. Hang in there. You are doing the right thing to create long term weight loss.

All right everyone had a right answer yet all of the them didnt give full answers.

First of all yes your dehydrated, okay this is simple to stop. 10 minutes before you run drink 2 cups of water (16oz) to help with the cramps. Also cramps are lactic acid build up and only one known thing counter reacts lactic acid. Potassium and the bestthings for potassium are bananas and kiwis. While you drinkyour water eat one4 of these fruit. Cramps are also caused by breathing. If you inhal less than you exhale breathing can cause cramps. when you get the cramps, change your breathing pattern. Finally, you have your period so this just going to make cramps worse. Stretchout the cramps after you run and drink alot of water.

i know cramps is very painful coz i experienced lots of it too...any workouts and activities must be lessen or stopped and then you may seek relief.
for me, stretching the muscle stops the pain. for the legs and feet, lay down and get your legs elevated, with 2-3 pillows under your legs. when your body cramps, you can stand about 2 to 2½ feet from a wall (possibly farther for a tall person) and lean into the wall to place the forearms against the wall with the knees and back straight and the heels in contact with the floor.
try it...i hope it will be a great relief...

Something about the nitrogen in the muscles not being eliminated quickly enough I think. Salt comes into it also but hey, what would I know? I'm a walk, dont run sort of guy.

warm up and streatch properly
make sure you do a gentle warm down instead of stopping straight away.
that way you give your muscles a chance to cool down. I know if I don't i get really bad cramps every where.

It's simple! You're dehydrated! Drink more water! Eating a banana woudn't hurt either.

Press your heels down. you will sense the backs of your legs stretching out of your heels up on your butt. It feels great! you're able to do it as many circumstances as you %, until eventually you sense extra beneficial.

Cramps are usually caused by dehydration, lack of electrolytes, or stress induced by inadequate conditioning.

If you remember doing warm-ups and stretches at school, do them. If not get a book at the library or watch it on t.v

always stretch before u excersize and after u excersize trust after like 3 days it should work(ps. stretch everywhere)
