A friend of mine has invited me to visit him at his apartment on Seaman Ave in the Inwood neighborhood area of Manhattan. I am from the country and afraid of cities. Is Inwood a safe neighborhood? If I took the subway from GranddCentral would I go through any unsafe neighborhoods? Thanks

It depends.

Granted, the entire neighborhood is safe but some parts are "safer" than others. The area west of Broadway and north of Riverside Drive are very good....near the parks. The areas east of Broadway and along Dyckman Street and W. 207th Street are busy....mainly Latinos (Dominicans) walking around. It isn't bad there, but like I said some parts of Inwood are "safer" than others.

Just north of Washington Heights Inwood also known as Dyker Heights is a desirable neighborhood. About 30 years ago, it was slightly runned down.. That's changed over in the last 10 years with more young professionals moving in.

Inwood is pretty safe neighborhood. Very quiet and almost feels like you're in the suburbs. Just use common sense and you'll be fine.
