I'm 21 years old, and am taking the antidepressant, Celexa. It is not recommended that patients drink while on this drug. It apparently causes drowsiness, and I'm unpredictable while drinnking anyway, since I only drink on holidays or family events. However, I don't want to tell people that I'm on antidepressants. Which other medication can I use as an excuse not to drink, especially now that the holidays are coming up and I'm going to be surrounded by my extended family (my parents know about the antidepressants, but my other relatives don't).

Almost any bottle of medicine you get from a pharmacy will tell you that you are not supposed to drink alcohol while taking the medication. Unless you have a family member who is in health care, they would not know the interactions of alcohol on a specific medication. Antibiotics jump to mind, but then you would have to explain what sort of infection you had and they might think you were contagious. You could claim you were taking allergy medications too...which also make you drowsy, but if you have no history of allergy problems, that could lead to a lengthy explanation. So, if you insist upon using an excuse, I would be very vague. You could also just insist that you don't drink ANYTHING before you drive, which is perfectly reasonable given that most states have adopted a .08 blood alcohol level (most people are not really too impaired to drive a car at .08 but it will get you a DUI and it is hard for people to tell when they get to .08)

Hope this helps.

The only excuse you need is "no thank-you".

Why do you need an excuse not to drink? You are only 21 years old - you should have only had your first drink pretty recently. If your family is presuring you to drink against your will they are the ones who should be coming up with excuses, not you!

If you really need to make an excuse, tell them you've been getting migraines and drinking brings them on. Migraines are always great excuses for a lot of things, like if you need an excuse for leaving or not showing up somewhere, lol.

First of all, depression is not a stigma,no need to be embarrassed, anyhow tell them you are taking antiallergics which can cause drowsiness ,so you can not tolerate to drink.

Tell them you're on acutane, or a very powerful form of acutane for psoriasis. Tell them that the doctors said that if you drink while on this medication that it can harm your chances of fertility later on, so you're just being careful.

Yep tell them you are taking Antabuse, this makes you very ill if you drink on it. Of course this is usually taken by people with alcohol dependancy issues but at least they won't know you are depressed. They will just think you are a lush....
