I think 300 dollars is a lot to make a mistake on, so its important you get it right! Ask him if theres anything in particular he would like or at least to give you some ideas, this shouldnt be hard as he seems to have done the same with you i.e his buying you a purse.
Its hard to answer this as I dont know your bf, but usual mens gifts include: Mens Frangrances, Gadgets, Computer Games or maybe you could buy a sexy novelty gift for him.

It's good you've set a budget, but don't fret over a minimum; if you have leftover, buy him some odds and ends -- DVDs, some cooking utensils, tools (guys love tools), a nice shirt. A big gift is of course wonderful, but bonus gifts are fun too.
