I am 19, my ship out date is Feb 20th, 2008. Well I thought to myself what can I do to get in shape for boot camp! I know I will take some boxing lessons and call it a day! But as I boxed, I began to form a liking to this brutal sport! Now I am having second thoughts because I now want to make this serious! Should I turn down the Navy for this or does the Navy have a boxing league? And if so, how do I qualify? Thank you!

The Navy has a boxing team, and of course you can be a part of it. After you get to your first duty station, ask your chain of command for ways to get on it. And keep fit!!

In my opinion, it seems like you've been looking for reasons for a couple weeks to get out of your Navy contract. If you don't decide before you leave, that the Navy is what you want to do, you're going to have a rough time adapting when you get to boot camp and after.

The Navy has athletics. Most commands that you get to after A school will have an athletic program in place where you can sign up to play baseball, basketball, boxing.. etc. If you're good, you can try out for the Navy teams that compete. If your command doesn't have any regular teams, you can start some. You'll probably get tons of support from your command for starting any sort of sports program.

Boxing training while in the Navy might be difficult, especially if you are heading to a ship after boot camp and schools. You could try out for the Navy boxing team, but as some others put it, it is a difficult road. Tough decision, but regardless I do recommend the Navy. It can be a tough job, but it is still a job, unlike the boxing, which is no guarantee.

Yes, the Navy has all kinds of different sports teams. I actually had one of the Navy's body building champions working for me as a welder. First of all, stick with your trade but continiue to follow boxing after you get out of basic and "A" school. At your first duty station (probably a ship, a large deck carrier or amphibious assault ship would be a good place for you to inquire about boxing.) contact the MWR or even the medical department for information on sports. Yes the Navy has sports teams made up of people from differnt commands. These people are given orders to the sports teams that they try out for and successfully are accepted into. Some members actually excell enough to make it to the Olympic Team.

one thing you must understand is you cannot expect to show up to your first duty station and immediately be able to try out for the Boxing team. you must be Olympics caliber or higher to even THINK about it. and in most cases you can't be in your first term, and your Command has to allow you the time to train.

another thing to consider: there are ZERO guarantees that you will be able to make any money/excel/win matches , but the Navy guarantees you training and a steady paycheck. with less risk of getting permanently injured. You can still indulge in yourlove of the sport on your own time.
