She has gone out to the range with me in the past and now she desires to have a weapon with her for personal protection. The problem is I really don't know much about them and would like some advice. I would like to stay under $500. I currently own a Glock and was looking at a couple of Glocks. A co-worker of mine recommended a revolver. Let me know what you think

If you and she go to the range regularly, then a semiauto is a good choice, but if the range is once in a blue moon event then a revolver is better (revolvers can withstand less cleaning and use than a semiauto). However, since she already has some experience w/ semiautos then she may prefer them over revolvers, ultimately only she can make that decision.

For a semiauto, you are already aware of Glock (look at the Glock 19 or 26, both are good ones) or Sprindfield XD. I like Glocks better, but both are easy to maintain and not overly expensive when compared to other manufacturers. If you get an XD, buy new, some older ones were prone to rust, that was rectified for models starting in 2006 (better coating used). For a revolver, look at Ruger and maybe Taurus (no personal experience w/ Taurus). Ruger revolvers are on the heavy side but that makes them far more durable than others. In my opinion, for the price, you can't go wrong with a Glock. Good luck.

When I chose my firearm for personal protection (I am a woman), my husband and I rented different subcompacts at the range. This gave me the opportunity to get a feel for the gun. I ended up choosing a CZ Rami. I also liked the Glock 26.

I don't think people should assume a woman can't handle a semi-auto. Cleaning and maintaining a gun isn't rocket science. If your wife is a responsible gun owner (which I am sure she will be), she will manage.

I would think a .38 single action revolver would be good. A little 2 1/2 in. barrel would be small enough to carry in her purse and with a revolver she wouldn't have to worry about putting one in the chamber, just point and pull the triger. Smith and Wesson makes a nice little stainless gun that will last forever, for about 400 dollars. If you want a auto. I carry a Sig. 45 auto. It's small, light weight and extremly accurate, plus leaves a very large hole on exit. Be carful about getting like a 308 or anything that travels real fast, because you may have a hard time stopping someone that is jacked up on something. The bullet wil go thru them and not leave much of a exit wound.

I would not go with a revolver. Only has 6 bullets. In my opinion, I would go with like a Walther ppk 380 or a Bersa 380. Both have a 9 round click with one in the chamber, giving an extra 4 chances to hit the target. Both are small and easily fit into a purse or pocket, and neither of them have a large recoil making it easy for a female to fire and still maintain control of the firearm.

I would avoid a semi-automatic pistol for a first time personal defense handgun for your wife. The women in most of my Pistol Training classes really like the 5 Shot Smith & Wesson Model 36 "Ladysmith" 38 Special Revolver. It is relatively easy for most all women to handle and fits most everyones hands. It is a decent man stopper in 38 Special caliber, and makes a good handgun for personal protection in the home.

There is always time for her to master this handgun, then upgrade to another caliber or semi-auto later on. You have to remember that is a gun for HER and not for you..You can see from the other answers, it's the same. They all preach semi-automatic's because thats what THEY like, not necessarily what a woman would want and can handle easily....The S&W Revolvers will fit easily into your budget and you can always consider a used one in good to excellent shape to save some money.Take you wife out and let her handle different handguns and if possible arrange for her to shoot a few different calibers and guns to see what fits HER best...Good Luck..

For a hand gun for their accuracy I would recommend a Beretta 40 cal first, then a Springfield armory 40 cal...... then a S+W 40 cal..... I goto the range at least 3 times a week and shoot everything from my high powered rifles to hand guns, and for accuracy the Beretta has impressed me the most....

rather than increasing a family's safety, the introduction of a gun into the home actually makes it more likely that those living there will die at the hand of a gun. Compounding this omission, the ad appears to endorse leaving a gun and ammunition unsecured and in plain view, even in a home with young children.

why dont you let her choose after all its all about how the weapon feels in her hands not yours take her to the gun store and let her hold a few and see which one she feels most comfortable with
