That depends. You are comparing two significantly different cameras. The Canon is an excellent Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) with interchangeable lens. This is significantly more complex to build and use because you have MANY options, since you can buy various lenses and an extensive (and expensive) array of additional lenses and other attachments, it makes a very flexible and expandable system.
The Sony is is designed to be a more compact easy to carry & use system, with a lot of flexibility but very little provision for expanding the range of functions.
In general Canon is a top quality brand and IMO would be a better quality camera than the Sony.
You can get good objective reviews from Steve's Digicams to review each camera. See links below.
Hope this helps, email if you have specific questions about either model.

The Canon EOS Rebel XTi is better.
BUT:
To get the most out of the camera, it will require a bigger long term investment. With a basic lens and the built-in pop up flash, it will still blow the Sony away in terms of image quality. But if you want to be able to do more with it--more zoom for example, you'll have to buy different lenses or other accessories like a flash for the hotshoe.
The Canon has more megapixels (10 vs. the Sony's 6), does better at high ISOs (i.e. better in dim light), will be better for focusing, zooming and continuous shooting.
Where the Canon is weakest is in the standard lens, because the Sony includes a lens that's like mounting a 28-300mm zoom on the Canon. If you want the same kind of zoom for the Canon, then get the body and a 28-300mm zoom and forget the standard 18-55mm lens. However, my suggestion would be to get the 18-50mm Sigma f/2.8 lens and later, when you can afford it, add a 70-200mm image stabilized lens as a second lens.
If your budget won't allow you to do that, but you *need* the zoom, then the Sony is better for you. On the other hand, if you don't need the zoom (and about 80% of the photos most people take can be handled by the standard 18-55mm Canon lens), the Canon will be the better camera.
For me...I'd take the Canon without hesitation. Much better camera and much more room to grow and no compromises on image quality whatsoever.

You are comparing apples to oranges.
The Sony is a digicam and the Canon is a DSLR.
The Sony has a smaller sensor and uses a proprietary memory card. The Sony has an optical zoom. The Canon has a larger sensor and uses a memory card which you could use in a Nikon or Pentax if you wished. The Canon has interchangeable lenses which gives you more creative freedom.
Go to shutterbug.com and read the article "The Pros & Cons of Pixel Packing" which is in the Nov. 2007 issue.
If it were my money it would be spent on the Canon.
