"Best thing since sliced bread" is actually sarcasm.

Sliced bread gets stale faster, but the advertising pointed out that it was more convenient, and safer for kids, since no sharp knives were involved. Thus "best thing since sliced bread" actually means something that is *claimed* to be golly-gee-whiz better, but in fact, is nothing to write home about.

Having lived in the era of unsliced bread, I can tell you that the innovation of packets of sliced bread was extremely appreciated!!!
Just to slice the bread to cut lunches for four kids, took as much time as it now takes to prepare the complete lunches.
Plus, unless you were very careful, (and so slower,) the slices of fresh bread were thicker than you wanted them to be. Fresh bread is more difficult to slice than bread a day or so old.
So, the saying "best thing since sliced bread" usually relates to some time-and-labour-saving device.

Walk by a bakery and smell the bread cooking.
Better yet, make your own bread from scratch.
Bread is comfort food. It's warm and filling and you can spread butter on it. When you slice the loaf a little steam escapes with the fresh dough smell......mmmmmmmmmmmmm
Oh, yeah, and the way things are today it is great to not have to take the extra minute to actually slice the bread yourself....you can buy it all cooked and sliced for you.

sliced bread was only available with the advent of the industrial revolution mostly women worked in the kitchen and sliced bread saved time and injuries associated with slicing it your self and as every slice was even there was now waste also women didn't have to bake it themselves as petty as it sounds it changed alot of peoples lives when it was introduced imagine life without it you just take it for granted

If you ever make your own bread, you'll know that slicing it is a pain!! Getting bread pre-sliced must have been a huge convenience :-)

Not to slice it in the bakery but at home with a knife it stays longer fresh and everyone can slice as tick as they want.
