I'm going to suggest a non-Canon solution: The Tamron 90mm f/2.8 macro lens.

The lens is suitable for portraits, and you can also use it for macro/close-up images.

Excellent quality lens too. It'll also be cheaper than a Canon-equivalent, and because it's a one-lens solution, you won't have to get two lenses.

There are many good portrait lens available at amazon. you can start from EF 80 mm. Or you can choose a 100-300 mm. macro lense for using together with other opportunity.
