Distributed computing would be Mac or Linux with Mac being the easiest to manage
Multimedia would be Mac
Database management would be Windows although Mac can run all 3 OSes and is fine with mysql.

depend on the user toward that operating system and software needed and the most is budget. If the user is familiar with windows either mac or unix, so just use the windows or others.
If for me, i will suggest using windows as can buy the hardware at lower price and no need worry about the software tat use on it as almost all software are suit for windows. Beside that, hardware driver is also be more easy to suit wif windows os and work with software.

1. Known render farms are Linux, known @home projects can make use of any OS.
2. Multimedia is Windows; because it simply easier to access for development.
3. DB management is UNIX; you said live management not a development design in dry dock. UNIX can scale up easily.
