It's not the reading comprehension that bothers me so much as the critical thinking. I hate it when people use the answer "Because the Bible says so," without even considering what the practical application of certain rules, symbols, etc... might actually be (for instance, I can think of half a dozen reasons not to engage in extramarital sex that have nothing to do with the Bible).
Unfortunately critical thinking & reading comprehension usually go hand-in-hand, so those who falter at one falter at the other.

I was reading the Bible way before eighth grade. And there are many good versions and paraphrases available, such as the New International Version, the Amplified Bible, Good News for Modern Man, The Way.....Not to mention children's Bibles and the Illustrated Bible, which is basically a comic book of Bible stories.
The Bible is also available on MP3 or CD or CD Rom.
Lack of resources is not an excuse, especially not in the States where study materials, versions etc. are freely available.

The Bible is not the easiest book to read. I am actually amazed when people can quote it and have it practically memorized cover to cover. Many people are taught that it is far more important to study their Bible than to study other things. And while I agree it is important to read and study the scriptures, it is very very important to be well rounded and educated, as well.
Reading recreationally isnt stressed enough probably because parents that dont like to read dont have much incentive to instill a love for reading in their children.
I think when someone can read and quote the Bible so easily but cant comprehend basic math, science and other reading that it is sad because clearly they had the ability and potential to be quite intelligent. If they can lead a succesful fulfilled life, though, who am I to say what they are doing isnt working for them. Unfortunately they are sometimes making sure their kids arent as opened up to as many opportunities as they could have been.

If half the US reads at an 8th grade level, then those uneducated fundies must have a much lower reading level since they seem to have a hatred for education.
If they read at or below an 8th grade level, there's no way they can truly comprehend it. That's why so many of them take it so literally. They lack the ability to interpret, so they just do what the preacher says. I guess this explains the sheeplike behavior among fundies.

They can take classes at an alternative education center and learn to read, also there are many Bible Cd's out that have the whole Bible on them and even explain what it means. There are also DVDs people can watch. Illiteracy is no excuse not to learn the word of God. What about the blind? They can't even see the Bible and some cannot read Braille, so they rely on listening to others and hearing the word of God.

most people repeat what the hear and not what the read. they take their messages from those they think are right and most things they do say that the Bible mandates the Bible is so vague on it that it takes several translators and several interpreters to get it to the message at hand. most don't read anything especially what is assigned. I was a teacher for over 30 years and know that reading anything was not how people learn to memorize and express themselves. Most take some fancy talkers side and believe it no matter how stupid it is.

I actually do believe that stat. They don't is the answer. I find that except for a few favorite passages, I know the Bible better than many Christians-and I'm an atheist.

I'm not sure about your statistics, but many of the modern translations of the Bible are translated at about an 8th grade reading level, or even a little lower. Hmmm...

Those stats can't be correct unless your including children in your numbers.
I doubt half of US adults read below an eighth grade level.
