There is some old missile silos out by where i live. Elizabeth Colorado, if anybody is interested and can look them up on google or wikimaps to see exactly what I'm talking about. anyway, they are old retired titian missile holding/launching silos. this is purely out of curiosity, but what is inside those old silos, i heard maybe water, but is there a chance there is old military equipment from around 1965 when the base/silos were retired.i would really like to know an educated/professional answer to this question, thank you

in the 60's none were destroyed, only stripped and salvaged.and
it REALLY depends on the Salvager- the military took what they could re-use, and what was sensitive, then hired Salvagers to remove whatever they could- i have seen pictures of different bases, and there is no rhyme or reason to what was stripped out- from totally gutted concrete structures, to different pumps and motors, even a couple with the Missile cribs still partially in place

also- the military did NOT decontaminate these places until relatively recently- the titan I and Atlas bases abandoned in the 60's werent cleaned up until the 1990's and later!

the Elizabeth Base is a Titan I 3 launchers, 2 antenna silos, a 100' control dome, a 120' power house, these were MASSIVE underground sites! sad thing about Elizabeth site is Elbert county let a
Scrapper begin to destroy it- from the pics i see, i would bet at LEAST the tunnel way and tunnel junction at the Antenna Silos are destroyed or severely damaged- Rebar and VERY thick steel was shown sitting in a pile after the scrapper was Evicted

after Abandonment, there is NO power in these- unless someone is doing restoration work, they are dark, usually wet, sometimes (as in Lincoln,Ca) totally full of water- missing floor panels, doors, safety rails, ETC make them VERY dangerous to explore- imagine walking through a door, and there is a 100' drop, no railing, no light, only a Deadly drop to standing water or scrap metal, or both

the Titan II SILOS were destroyed, and the entry ways de-capped and buried, but the Command center werent bothered with- some people have dug them up, finding lots of equipment still in them- nothing sensitive, but not stripped clean either!

I know that there are a few silo's in different states like colorado, kansas, etc. part of the old Norad system.
Most are pretty much a hold over from the cold war, so that we would have counterstrike capabilities if the USA were every nuked by the soviet union.
I can't attest for all silo's but I had heard of one that was sold to a person who converted it into a multi level home.
Seems to me that something that deep dug into the earth would have seepage problems but the article seemed to portray the owner as chipper enough.

Every decommisioned silo is classified in different categories. Usually has to with how old they are. The older ones are filled with dirt, water or cement. However, some are used for storage and some are in a "mothball state" just in case they are needed again. Just depends on the condition, where they are at.

Once they are retired they are stripped of anything remotely useful or of a Military Nature. Then they are Decontaminated to ensure that there is no Hazardous materials present. Finally they are put up for sale.

BUT in the time between Decon and Sale, NOTHING is done to them the power is off so the pumps that kept the water out are not working. One that I saw that was being converted into a home was FULL of water.

Most of the silos are stripped of their missiles, launch equipment and anything useful. Some people buy them and use them as homes; i think there's even a school that was built inside one of the larger silos.

hell, you can buy them.

Mostly water. I watched a special on HGTV where some of them that were sold were turned into underground homes. I personally know of one that was one in Rural Ridge Pennsylvania that was filled with water. I believe it was an old Nike-Zeus site.

Old empty space, these locations are not playgrounds, many are without lights so if you go in and have an accident it could be months before you get discovered.
The sites are still Government property and you could be charged with trespassing!!.

I believe one of the missile silo's was used to "bury" the remains of the shuttle Challenger.

The one I explored was indeed filled with water. It was intentional though; the farmer who owned the field found it to be useful.
