As far away from city lights as possible. I would think that there are some great places out there when you get out of the city. Only been to California once and saw almost nothing of the stars. I missed that so much while I was there. If you find a place enjoy it!

To see stars (the kind in the sky) you have to get away from the city lights which usually means out into the desert. May I suggest that on a night when there is a new moon, drive north on Ca14 between Rosamond and Mojave. It's fairly dark there, you'll get a great view of the night time sky, and being just within your 100 mile limit, will only cost you a tank of gas.

Freeak, get in touch with the Orange County Astronomy Club. It is the largest amateur astronomy club in the world. They have special events, sometimes the events are at the major observatories (like Palomar, Mt. Wilson and Griffith Observatory). There are a lot of Cal.Tech, USC, UCLA astronomy department and astrophysics alums in there. Very Knowledgable...(They know the good spots to star gaze)....

Try Joshua Tree National Park; during the Hale Bopp Comet, I went camping there at the southern edge of the park, and an astronomy club had scores of telescopes set up there to see the comet and other things.
About a 100 miles away you could also go to San Pasqual Valley (by the Wild Animal Park) to see stars; here's a link to an organization that does telescope parties there. They are cancelling the star parties for a few months because of the recent fires, but they'll be back in business in a few months. http://aquatest.org/_wsn/page2.html.
Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah has got to be one of the best spots in the entire US to see stars...maybe some day you'll go there for vacation.

Fillmore and Santa Paula, CA (Ventura County)
Find a nice road off of highway 126 in the orchards, just watch out for coyotes.

well i live in Hollywood and when my dad and I go up for drives to see the stars in the sky, we usually go up as close to as we can to the Hollywood sign or we go up to the Observatory. but make sure you go look at the stars when there is a clear sky, because then it looks better.
