I can't explain it, other than they can tap into their own inner strengths and pull through. Yes, I would be able to do this too. I'm just as human as anyone else, including atheists. I've used my own strengths to overcome hardships many times without prayers and meditations. I think anyone can do this. Atheist or theist, it's a very good trait to have and use.

The concept of Self is actually a cosmic belief also... to say that you overcame things yourself still states you believe in something...
The true definition of an atheist is someone who does not believe in anything... not God, not government, not in others or in themselves....
I do believe personally that people who say they are atheists are simply persons who do not know what they want to believe or otherwise....life was either without event or traumatic to them and therefore causes them to question to doubt and to be the "Show Me" personalities. If a person feels complete in their belief or non-belief then it works for them...
but
if a person feels unfulfilled no matter the situations, then there is always room to overcome, question and avoid pain isn't there? And there is always a chance to open your mind to other things....
Besides someone who believes in nothing wouldn't believe they've been through adversity or pain. Nor would they believe in accomplishment or pleasure.
For you see,
A [man] should worship, study, learn, live and love according to the dictates of his/her own conscience.
Every person has some kind of concept of right and wrong. (Even if it's skewed)
Perspective is everything....

I'd say it's from inner strength and the individual's outlook on life. I would rely on the same thing. While I pray daily, I've always been a rather proactive person where my own problems are concerned. I think God expects us to use the resources we have been given as in our brains, logic, and personal network of people to sort through things.

Another question might be: How do virtually the entire populations of Japan, China and India overcome hardships even though they don't subscribe to Christianity?

The human spirit can be strong. Many things I think we can solve on our own or with the help of each other. We do not need to turn to God for every little thing. That is why I don't really pray. I think I can manage most things myself.

If there is a God, you don't get treated differently because of what you believe or, if you believe. That is the venue of small minded humans. If there is not a God what difference does not believing in a God make?

I would actually leave that atheist to their privacy. If they want to tell their story that's up to your hypothetical atheist themselves.
As a person who has been a lot of things, I know we all walk long roads. I only know my own story. That's enough for me. But I listen to anyone's.

Ironic, but the Bible answers that.
Jesus said, "But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you,
that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust."
I am sure you fit somewhere between the two extremes of just and unjust, evil and good.

The strength they draw on comes from within, for both of them.
Calling it God or not calling it God doesn't change what it really is.
