My flat mate and I are having a debate about the way a roll of toilet paper should be placed on the holder. Should it be with the roll come towards you when you pull it, or away off the holder....???? Please Help us

I don't think there's a correct way, but it's easier to reach the toilet paper when it's coming towards you from the top.

YEARS ago, the Ann Landers newspaper "help column" had a massive debate about this; it literally went on for years, off and on. The conclusion was that there is no "right" way to hang it - just differing opinions. I prefer it with the "new" sheet at the top, but it's not a big issue. For a while, I had to hang it the other way; my two cats had figured out how to pull it toward them and unroll it, so I came in a few times to find most of a roll unwound on the floor below, not to mention pulled all over the house!

All in all, I say flip a coin :-)

Toilet paper manufacturers make toilet paper with a front and back side. This is proven by which side the design is for printed papers, or embossed papers; therefore the only way for this paper to be dispensed properly is OVER THE TOP, so that the design or embossed side shows.

Other benefits is that you touch on the paper hanging down, not the roll behind it. Or the wall behind the roll.

This question is absolutely asked to DEATH on Q&A, and there really is only one answer. However, it isn't life or death, and do it however you like.

From the front (over the top).

This was actually mentioned in a great book called Personality Plus by Florence Littauer. It is about the four temprements and people's personalities.
It is usually the Melancholy temprement that gets hung up about which way the toilet roll faces... they specifically mention this.
And when the author mentions it as seminars, Melancholy people actually come up to her and thank her for pointing this out... because their spouses who are usually the opposite personality just don't understand why it is such a big deal! Hehe.

It should be that the roll comes towards you when you pull it. Or, in other words, the start of the roll should be near the top of the roll, facing out towards the person.
Take care.

The paper roll should go "over" the top (toward) the person pulling it off the roll. It should not go "under" the roll.

It all comes down to personal preference. My hubby and I had this debate, we settled it by deciding that whoever used the last of the roll, had to hang a new roll - whichever way they wanted it to face - this also took care of the lazy "i used up the roll, but will set a new one on the sink" problem

i alway make sure the paper comes from the top for some practical purposes of the paper not being cut down and easily pulled , either way whatever is convenient just make sure there is enough to cover ones a s s in time of need.

In should hang so the paper goes over closest to the wall, not in whats called the "incorrect overhand fashion". If it is close to you then when you pull it it just keeps coming, so you can't whip a sheet away without using two hands. Hanging it the other way means you can whip one sheet off with 1 hand. Also, since its less likely to flap in the breeze it won't unravel itself all into the toilet when you're not thre and is less attractive to pets to pull. Also the printing is on the other side and won't irritate your bum.

Away off the holder. It's easier to tear you pieces off without having to use both hands, or having the pieces not tear, leaving you with 2 m of toilet paper on the floor.

I believe it is referred to as "underhand fashion" as opposed to "overhand fashion"
