No. When you receive back a peice of work, and it has a percentage, or a A-F grade on it, you know exactly how well you have performed.
I'm in Aus, and when I was half was through High Scool, the changed the grading system, and we started receiving S, or NS (satisfactory, or Non-Satisfactory), there was no way to jusge whether you had just scraped by, or got 100%. It drove me nuts.
IMO, without a clear grading system, student have nothing to go on, and no clear direction. It sure as hell wont fly in college if they're only getting 51%

I wish it could happen. But, like communism, it would never work. The fact is that people need incentives to do work. I know that I would simply fail to study for my calculus, which I have no interest in, if there was going to be no grade for it. And a no-grade system would be impractical. There has to be a way to measure the achievements of others for hiring purposes.

What KIND of grades?
Like KinderGarten thru 12th?
Or: A-F?
Why should they be? We have to have some kind of knowledge on how our children are suceeding! Without this, it would be just empty? what? I mean what would be the use of even sending our kids to school?
I DO agree with you on an issue however...
I think it is ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS to 'FLUNK" a KinderGartener!!!
I mean!?? come on! what the?? whats up with that?
How can you FLUNK coloring? ABC? Socializing? Pottyskills
SO WHAT!? if others are slower..that is exactley why they went to K-Garten, but seems that the K is the NEW First Grade and PRESCHOOL is actually K-GARTEN...
its just stupid, really
i think we need to let our babies be BABIES!! THEY have only 18 years -------------to let someone think for them
and then. (tears) theyre on their own
:)

No. I'm assuming you are talking Elementary School. If kids didn't have grades why would they try? The last thing a kid that age wants is to stay back and if they don't have grades they wont so nobody will care about the work they are given.

I disagree with tests. I think it should be based on homework, and participation, because some kids just aren't good test takers. But colleges can't just let anyone in with IQ's of 5, so grades are necessary.

They allow people to judge how well a student meet expectations. Without grades college and parents would have a harder time judging students and students would have a harder time knowing how they are doing.
They may not be needed in early years since teacher and parents talk often.

Measuring progress is vital to progress in the real world (called work) Start early to learn the system.
No other option that works

There needs to be a standard to tell who needs more help, what you should be studying more in, what you're more adept at, etc. The concept of not putting limits on children and imposing standards and rolls will not help them feed themselves when they have to make it on their own.

No, why would they be? There is a specific purpose for them and there is no logical reason for them to be abolished.
