Make sure you don't dominate the conversation. Offer opportunities for the guest to answer and add input. Ask questions that will engage in conversation as opposed to an answer requiring a 'yes' or a 'no' answer. Stay away from the hot topics like the presidential debates and the war in Iraq. Ask about his/her opinions on the local sports teams, whether it's a professional team or college team in your area. Inquire about hobbies or interests such as the arts, theatre or local museums. Mention an interesting exhibit you have recently seen, or read an article about. You can also discuss educational background, universities attended, or studying abroad if applicable.

Limit talking too much about your personal life unless that is the direction the conversation is heading. But don't overdo it. Make limited references to your spouse & children. You might discuss personal accomplishments or awards received.

In any good conversation, pay attention, listen, let the speaker know you understand the message, and respond appropriately.

Good luck!

For a formal business setting, you generally avoid personal questions.
Talk about light subjects, like the weather, traffic, or food. Ask them how long they have been with the company, or ask them about their business related background or training.

Asking questions is a great way to get people to open up. Be sure you practice good listening skills, don't interrupt them, and don't repeat yourself.
