Love comes from chemicals and as yet there is no point to life because God doesn't actually exist. Have you ever heard the saying 'Life is what you make it' or 'Live life to the fullest' my point to life is that there is no major point to life so we might as well go out and enjoy the 80 odd years that we have. BTW these chemicals do not respond until you find that special person, so love is still a big deal

No no no. You've got it backwards. The brain is beautiful and amazing. It can love, it can remember the words to your favorite song, or the sound of your grandma's voice. It can do long division. It has billions of synapical connections. It grew from a single cell. It's a miracle and it can fall in love. And love is a wonderful thing. And just because you can learn how the mechanical process of the brain works does not make love any less real or less amazing.
On the other hand, the idea of a soul cheapens the amazing reality of the brain. If your soul could exist independent of the body - then how could you explain Alzheimer's or strokes or any brain injury that affects a person's ability to live and love. Clearly memories are in your physical brain - and so is your personality. If the soul is you - minus memories and personality - then it can't be important. The real you is your brain. And that's a really cool thing.

My dear,
we have both the chemical and the rational all wrapped up into one; that is why we often get too confused. Human beings are not only animals that have intrinsic impulses which are reflected in their identity and activity as women and men, but their 'gender' is defined as females and males in their characteristics and rational choices. There is a caveat to our sexuality; This basically means that we are often required to detach from our impulsive emotions in order to be truthful to our love and justice that are needed for a well ordered community.
P.S the question you post is on every ones mind; Body and soul how does it work?
Peace

I'm pretty much in agreement with your viewpoint, except that there is a point of life or else all of the cells in your body wouldn't be working together as one.
Also, just because emotions can be explained on a secular level doesn't mean they don't exist. The soul is a metaphor for the physical mind.

There is something that has to set off that chemical reaction...so there is more to love than just chemicals. Otherwise the chemicals could fire at any given point, without relation to another person (and I am sure you don't feel random love while shopping in the Wal-mart tampon aisle :) )

I say both. the chemicals are the part we can understand, our provable explanation for love. and it's fascinating, isn't it??
As for the soul, since I believe that God [or a higher power, whatever your belief] created these chemicals and everything else, then that's the part we can't have a human answer to.
...I hope I am right! :)

Dolphins, whales and elephants have mind to boot. the place did those animals get their mind from? there's a tale approximately an elephant getting used for hard artwork which includes moving logs. The elephant replaced into moving logs and while he replaced into waiting to place the log down, there replaced into an animal there. The elephant did no longer placed the log down no count how lots it replaced into being crushed via its grasp. The grasp finally observed why the elephant did no longer placed the log down. He have been given the animal to circulate then the elephant placed the log down. the two that's mind or morals. Does god furnish morals and mind to animals different than human beings?

Why no point to life if chemicals evolved to point us toward proper mates/child rearing partners?
I see no conflict with it at all. A former GF and I used to make jokes about "Pheromonal compatibility".
As Pangel so wittily and adroitly said last night, "Love at first scent".

Ugh. Describing a building does not change it.
So describing life in terms of chemistry does not make it any less worth living.
And yes, for what it is worth I do indeed believe that

It comes from our souls. Humans are spiritual as well as biological beings. There is a point to life. God loves us and wants us to love others as well.
