Your "comfort zone" description may be misleading you about the safety of, simply, "feeling comfortable."
Comfort is a realtive thing, but the extreme pain of a seriouos injury is anything BUT comfortable.
The fact that seatbelts are designed to keep the rider firmly against the bottom and back of the seat means that if someone needs more comfort, then the seat should be adjusted to accomodate. If a driver were allowed to "move," easily to a comfor zone, then he would move more during an impact. And THAT can spell disaster.
The point of newer car design is that the CAR takes and absorbs more of the impact. The driver should absorb less. In a collision, there are THREE separate impacts. 1. When the car hits an object. 2. When the car stops, the passengers tend to keep going. (momentum) The second impact is when the passenger hits the interior of the stopped car. 3. When the body stops after hitting the inside of the car, the internal organs want to keep moving. (momentum, again) When the body stops, the organs hit rib cages and other, more squishy things.
By keeping the body firmly strapped in place, seat belts minimize step #2, above. The car can, then take up much of the impact by crumpling, and deploying airbags, which minimize step #3.
Do you know what, specifically killed Princess Diana? She was NOT wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision. She hit the back of the seat in front of her, which broke some bones, but, what killed her was impact #3. When SHE came to a sudden stop against the seat, her heart continued and was, literally, torn from it's place. She survived the crash, but doctors could not reattach and repair the torn arteries.

Wearing a seat belt isn’t just a good idea, it’s the law,
Seat belt tickets can mean hefty fines and, in some places, points on your license.
Every 15 seconds, someone is injured in a traffic crash. If you’re not buckled up, you could be thrown through a window, sent skidding along the pavement or be crushed under a vehicle in a crash.
Someone is killed in a crash every 13 minutes. However, seat belts save over 11,000 lives each year, and they can help you maintain control of your car in a crash.
If you crash or slam on your brakes, your car comes to
a sudden stop. But you will keep moving until you, too, are
stopped—by the windshield, dashboard or pavement.
Wearing a seat belt stops your body from being thrown
around inside or outside the car. A seat belt decreases
the chances you’ll get hurt by firmly keeping you in place.

Over the years, it was determined that in the VAST majority of accidents that resulted in a death, it was because people were thrown out of the vehicle w/o seat belts.
While seat belts did not ELIMINATE deaths and injuries, they greatly reduced them. There was still the problem of belted drivers heads hitting the steering wheel, and the air bags have helped reduce those injuries.

If you're not wearing a seat-belt, your butt will go flying through the windshield. (been there and done that). Seat belts are meant to keep you from moving. I mean you if you crash into something or something hits you..the belt keeps you from flying forward. If anything..you might have whiplash but at least you won't be sprawled out on the street.

I would have agreed with you last year,
9 months ago i was in a terrible car accident in Canada, the car was Tboned at a 100 kl ms. we actually flipped 6 times in the air and landed on the roof of the car, during the rotation and withought his safety belt hooked up, my friend was flying around inside the car and caused more havoc than during the accident, he was killed , he also killed his wife who was also belted in he always refused to buckle up. my wife and i were badly injured but if not being for the belts we would have surely broken our necks as my friend did. seat belt save lives.

Maybe something to do with the fact that seat belts refrain you from going through the windscreen in a crash! Only thought! lol.

The law of motion.
Anything that is in motion will remaine in motion unless acted upon by an out side force( the seatbelt)
If it were not for the seatbelt you would go through the dash, window and the hood.
So as you can see it will stop you from flying through windshield.
