Honestly there is nothing useful that is free. I just started my family tree and almost for just about everything I am trying to get into you have to have a paid membership to, I am looking for my sister that was adopted out 8 years ago and I am having NO luck, It is very hard to get any records if 1 you dont have a paid membership or 2 if you dont have all the persons informations (social security number, birthplace, birthday, and etc.) you have to know alot of information to find out about people plus just about every web site you do have to pay. I know it really sucks but I havent found out anthing yet without paying!

In order to get a copy of a recent birth certificate you need to be named on the birth certificate as the mother or father, be the legal gaurdian of a child in question, be a cop, or have a court order. Birth records are sealed (in most states for somewhere between 50 and 100 years) before they are released to the public.

If you are looking for older birth records that are no longer sealed, talk directly to the Department of Records in your county courthouse for the cheapest price available-although most states charge a fee between $25 and $75 even when you get them direct from the state. Whatever the state charges you will be the cheapest price you will get.
