That is the 64,000 dollar question. Since we know that the great apes are also self aware how did they develop consciousness? Some scientist point to the neo-cortex as the place where consciousness resides. Until there is a person that is born with a birth defect that limits or erases consciousness and survives, we may never know. Good question, I will give you a star for this one.

Try reading "The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind" by J. Jaynes.

It explains his theory, and quite lot more. I found it fascinating

To answer that question, we first need a solid definition for "consciousness."

I'd love to see somebody propose one for it which was even remotely reasonable and could be met by humans but not modern computers.

And what is consciousness? Is it physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual; none or all?

Are you conscious when you dream? Are you not conscious when you are not aware.

Like a theoretical teapot orbiting saturn, it's not within resolution.

(As in, we aren't able to narrow it down enough to test it yet.)
