Have you heard of atheists before?
Or are there no atheists in the Islamic world like there are no gays either?

Many atheists will tell you they do not need religion.
I know that it is possible to live without religion, but not a good idea. I believe that the human psyche searches for connection to the larger reality. In order to ignore religion, we have to shut off parts of our psychic abilities. I think most religions can provide hope and give a person a sense of purpose, as long as they are not being abused by people who are dishonest or misguided.
Religion is a sort of way to organize all the input our brain gets from the world. It makes sense of the chaos for us so that we can function more effectively in the physical realm. As with any other model, though, the map is not the territory. We have to remember that there is much more going on that we can ever conceive or observe, so we need to have respect for others who have different perceptions and observations.

There are different viewpoints to this question. In my opinion, no, you don't need a religion. Religion refers to rigid rituals that are dedicated to a FAITH, and that is what I believe people require.
A lot of people will argue that having a belief in a certain religion helps you make your everyday decisions and is a great affecting factor in your sense of morality. I think that without religion it's a lot more difficult to decide what's right and what's wrong (people outside of religion tend towards relativity, which is not a very reliable philosophy)
This doesn't mean, however, that you have to choose a religion based on the values you appreciate. Again, it needs to come back to your faith, and not the rigid rituals of a religion.
I hope that helps,
:)

There seems to be many different reasons that people will choose to follow a certain religion.
For many people, it is what they were raised with. Because of this, it is very difficult for people to disassociate themselves with their indoctrination. they will therefore hold fast to that indoctrination as indisputable truth for the rest of there lives. They will also refuse to ever question it or entertain questions about it.
For many other people, it may be something that fills a need that they have. Those needs may include (but are not limited to) the following:
A search for answers
A need to belong
Help with personal issues
fear
ect.... I'm sure many other people could add to this list.
The big problem with religion;
Most of the major religions of the world revolve around the core belief that they are the ONLY path to God. This leaves you with only 2 possible outcomes.
1. Only one religion is correct and the rest are bogus. This gives you the responsibility to choose the correct one or suffer eternal punishment.
2. All of them are bogus, or at the very least, misguided.
I don't need religion!!! If I ever meet God, I'd like to sit down and have beer and pizza with him.

Well, to answer that question, you could try looking at some of the people, both now and throughout history, who aren't/weren't religious.
Look at Bill Gates for example. He's not religious and isn't a churchgoer, but no one can say that he hasn't found meaning in his life, with all he's contributed to society. This guy has done more for charity than many of us will EVER do. Religion isn't a big factor in his life but somehow he's doing OK.
Do you need religion to be happy, or to accomplish things in your life? As millions of people throughout the world prove... no, you don't.

I feel we are all one human species here on Earth in our time to do what we can to live our life the best we can. Religion is a means to keep the masses divided and in check, obeying law and order. If you study the core of Islam, Christianity, and Judaism, they are all basically the same. They all believe in One almighty God and they are all derived from Abraham.

A lot of people like the idea of things not being their fault, so they invent a god, made in their own image, to take the blame.
So lots of oppressed people, slaves and so forth, invented christianity which would explain why they weren't doing very well.
Same sort of thing with islam. Kismet says it's not my fault that I'm failure.
Most people are game enough to feel responsible for themselves and manage without.

I don't think that religion is necessary for the formation of a good person and a fruitful life. Good can happen in religion or out of it, same goes for the bad.

depends who the person is and what they decide that they need.
i decided many years ago to give my life to God(born again christian) and i need him now especially. i couldn't live without him by my side.
some people are pretty lucky and they have a cruisey life compared to some, so they tend to not believe in God/gods cos they don't need to look for that hope to keep themselves alive like some do.

It is my personal belief that one does not necessarily need a religion, but it is very good to be on a spiritual path. For myself, i had to find out by trial and error....i had to seek out my own spiritual truths and my core beliefs before i could maintain any type of faith or spiritual walk of life...
I think that this is why we are all here...to seek out our own spiritual truths and to practice love and tolerance toward all. Tolerance does not mean accepting someone elses point of view, but simply allowing them their own point of view without trying to change it or judge it, especially if it differs from my own.
I hope you find what it is you seek my friend....
Blessed Be

No, I don't need a religion and Islam is a religion.
You have a religion/faith.
To all the Christian fundamentalists trying weak semantics, faith is religion. Get over yourselves.
