What causes brain freeze? When a cold object touches the mucosal surfaces of the pharynx and hypopharynx (mouth and throat), the blood vessels constrict (contract) in response to prevent the loss of body heat. As the coldness recedes, the blood vessels relax again, quickly increasing blood flow to the brain. This sudden release is what causes the intense headache sensation.

A sneeze, known technically as a sternutation, expells air from your body at speeds between 100 MPH to 630 MPH (measured by JFK Health World Museum in Barrington, IL).
