To ease the heat. Nothing like a cold beer or wine on a scorcher hot Australian Day. It's just a part of being an Aussie.

There isn't. It is an outdated stereotype. Like all American men going deer hunting, being called Al or Homer and favoring martinis. Alcohol consumption in Australia among those who do drink has been falling for years.
We had a bottle of wine over dinner Friday night, that was the first drink for either of us since late Wednesday afternoon. Before that you would have had to go back to the previous Friday night. That amounts to about six standard drinks per week. There are many that drink more than that but there are also many others who would not touch a drop from one month's end to the next.

It's interesting that most people drink because they are hot, but that alcohol is a diuretic That's hardly the way to rehydrate your body but you did ask the question and without doubt that seems to be the answer. Or is it just the excuse?
Alcohol causes more misery and pain than any other drug in Australia yet we accept it in a lighthearted fashion. I drink sometimes and I'm not advocating prohibition, just wandering through my thoughts on the subject.

Well where im from TEMORA, NSW, we can have temperatures up tp 45oC (113fahrenheit), so a icy cold refreshing drink (beer) after working 14-16 hour days on the farm is just what we need.
We really dont drink as much as some people make out it to be.
