You only have to have your wisdom teeth removed if there is a problem with them; sometimes, they grow in sideways (not pointed straight up) and get jammed up with other teeth (these are called impacted) or because they just start poking up a little they dont get brushed well and they aren't very healthy teeth when they do come in.

The dentist can tell you if they have come in... or if you even have them to come in! Not everyone has all 4 "wisdom" teeth- some people have not even one of them. You might be worried for absolutely nothing!

You should brush, use a good toothpaste, good mouthwash and floss to clean your teeth and include an area from which the wisdom teeth would erupt- the farthest back on the upper and lower jaws. If they come in, and if they are healthy, they get to stay. If they come in wrong, make trouble for other teeth or have decay, then chances are they will need some help.

If the dentist identifies that you have wisdom teeth, and there are other missing teeth, it can help to fill in the gap so they can actually be teeth to look forward to!

Good luck- and get brushing!

Wisdom teeth are the third and final set of molars that most people get in their late teens or early twenties.(16-24) Sometimes these teeth can be a valuable asset to the mouth when healthy and properly aligned, but more often, they are misaligned and require removal.

How Do I Know if I Have Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth present potential problems when they are misaligned – they can position themselves horizontally, be angled toward or away from the second molars or be angled inward or outward. Ask your dentist about the positioning of your wisdom teeth. He or she may take an X-ray periodically to evaluate for the presence and alignment of your wisdom teeth. Your dentist may also decide to send you to an oral surgeon for further evaluation

Why Remove Wisdom Teeth?

1) Wisdom teeth can be hard to clean
and are more prone to decay.
2) Bacteria can infect the tissue surrounding
partially erupted molars and cause
gum disease.
3) Crowding can cause damage to
adjacent teeth and jawbone.
4) If wisdom teeth are inpacted, cysts can form
and destroy surrounding bone

What Does Recovery Involve?
How quickly you heal depends on the degree of difficulty of the extraction (a simple extraction of a fully erupted tooth versus a tooth impacted into the jawbone). In general, here's what to expect:
1) bleeding during the first 24 hrs.
2) facial swelling.-use ice packs
3) pain meds
4) antibiotics
5) foods
6) continue brushing on the opposite side
7) rinse with warm salt water.

Not every one has them pulled, if your wisdom teeth are a partial bone, then you need them pulled or it will hurt like you wouldn't believe, trust me you will know when you get them, if they have the room and are not going to interfer with your nevers or bite block you will be fine and don't have to get them pulled, BTW you get so much novacain you won't feel it, I didn't feel a thing and I had all 4 pulled at once. It was painless, untill the novacain wore off. So don't worry.

A huge majority of people have to get them pulled out. The thing is, most times, wisdom teeth do not come in straight, and go into other teeth. That causes other teeth to become pushed together and crooked. OUCH! If you're lucky, and they grow in without huge roots, you can get them pulled out instead of having a bigger process.

ok from what I understand....
If they are not causing any problems then they can stay. Here are some of the problems....
crowding, they can push your teeth around. if they are out and you don't reach them with the tooth brush they can get major cavities. they may hurt.
You seem scared to get them out. I wouldn't let that be the reason. I am sure you'll be fine. PLUS the dentist might just leave them. Ask for sealants, if they leave them in sealants can help with cavities. And for the record, I wouldn't take dental advice from people on yahoo answers. good luck

The molars sometimmes start to grow in crooked or sideways. You will know because your mouth will hurt. If your mouth is large enough to hold the wisdom teeth and they come in straight then you don't have to get them pulled. It is only when they cause crowding that they have to go. Hope you have a large mouth.

You only have to get them pulled out if they are growing in crooked. Usually an orthodontist will take an xray of your mouth to see if they are... Also, if there is no room for them to grow in they usually take them out as well. But if you have the room and they arn't growing in crooked I don't think you will need to get them pulled out.

The only reason for teeth to be taken out is if they are damaged/rotting or crowding the mouth so the teeth will grow crooked. make sure you clean your teeth properly. RIGHT ROUND THE BACK. ABSCESSES ARE COMMONPLACE NEAR WISDOM TEETH BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE LAZY WHEN CLEANING THEM.
