Honestly, I don't know what's so different about Blu-Ray and HD DVD. Better picture quality, sound and special features - but is that it? I'd rather buy DVDs, they are much cheaper and they're just as good in my opinion! Why spend so much for basically the same thing?
Do you buy HD-DVD or Blu-Ray? Or just DVDs?

HD (HDDVD or BluRay) is definitely an improvement over standard DVD. You need a Hi Def TV to see it though - and the larger the TV the more you see the difference (beginning around 32"). So a 1080p TV will show the difference. I went with HDDVD for a lot of reasons (mainly less expensive and I'm not subsidizing Sony winning a Monopoly control of hi def market) but it's visually the same as BluRay. Movie selections on either format are changing all the time - just search online. I have dvds that I will still play on the HDDVD player - they upconvert and look better (on the 1080p TV). If you go to hi def tv -cable/satellite, and hi def tv you wont like watching the non hd channels as much anymore - another reason to go with a hi def player. Then why buy new movies in dvd, when you can get the hi def versions (or just rent now and upgrade later).
The early lead of Blu ray was due a lot to PS3 sales, with Halo 3 out xbox 360 is now outselling ps3 5 to 1. This is beginning to weigh in on the format war. I've been renting HD DVDs from Netflix, and they also have bluray. There may never be a clear winner - just like PC and Apple.

Many people are just interested in watching a movie or tv show with a good plot. Others enjoy everything about movie making-the color, the sound, the special effects, the scenery etc, etc. That's what makes the difference. I am one of the latter. There are many movies I hated until I saw them in Blu-Ray. The second biggest expense in my life has never been a car but has always been my home theatre-cinematography has always been that important to me.
Getting the same thing....! Story line, yes; the whole movie experience diffinitely no. Not until you have HD DVD or Blu Ray.

I think blu-ray is space conserving... so like on a single blu-ray disc you can put a mass amount of data on it ( like maybe a 4 hour movie) wheres on a regular DVD you might only be able to handle 2-3 hours. HD- is just better picture qaulity i think.... but most HD-DVD have a reverse side so you can watch it on a regular TV, and when you get a HD TV you can flip it over to watch it in High Definition.... I don't really like any of the sony products... I would never get a blu-ray product

Blu-ray all the way!!! I've stopped buying DVD's since once you see movies in HD, it's hard to go back. Think of the difference between VHS and DVD's when it first came out. It's kinda like that.

I have an Upscaling DVD player hooked up to my HDTV through and HDMI cable and let me tell you............its quite amazing the difference it makes. It only cost me about 100.00 all together and I can't even tell that it is regular DVD.
But as far as long term afford ability and quality of picture I like HD-DVD because within 2-3 years there would be a smooth transition in price for the average buyer. Blu ray is fancy and a little over the top for what you need, after all nobody can "really" tell the difference between the two.........so lets go with what helps your wallet

Stick with dvd for now. This happened with VHS vs BETA MAX. Alot of people sunk their money into beta and it didnt win because the vhs was cheaper and more practical. I say wait it out and see which one is going to take over the market then make your purchase. You could buy a dvd upconverter and it would look pretty good untill you can get the full HD and have something that will have a future market with new titles.

There are almost NO movies out there that benefit from HD or Blu-Ray. It is just a scam right now!
Yes, there are now a couple coming out. But, still, pointless. Until they are the same price as DVDs (or lower, why do so many people download? DUH!)

dvd and hd, hd is way better! there is always going to be something better coming out dont try to keep up do what works for you. but you can definitely tell the difference, the action/special effects movies is what we buy in hd.
