Swelling can be from inflammation such as from a scratch or insect bite. However, many use the term swelling when it shouldn't be used. Edema is when fluid over fills the tissues of the body and it puffs up. The difference can be seen when you press into the puffiness. With edema a depression will remain. That is because it is fluid. With swelling from inflammation it will rebound almost immediately due to the inflammation.

Many use the terms interchangeably but they really are not synomonous.

One is a common name and one is a medical term. Also, swelling can be localized, as in a reaction to an injury or illness, while edema is a more generalized condition which can involved a whole limb.

In my opinion it is the same, since both have the same meaning. Edema and swelling mean accumulation of the fluid, so it s no wrong to use one or the other one interchangeably.

Edema comes from the Greek word "oidema" meaning "a swelling."

So there's no difference. except in the spelling and the usage in the medical parlance.
